For decades Jeep Wranglers have been associated with rugged 4×4 trail riding, eventually becoming synonymous with “off-roading”. If you’d like to purchase a new Wrangler, there are some things to look for:
1 – Fuel Injection. Most people will agree that you should get a fuel injected Wrangler. Starting in 1991 Jeep introduced fuel injection (on the Wrangler YJ model). This replace the troublesome carter carburetor. Not only will you get a better running and more fuel efficient Jeep by going with fuel injection, but you’ll also have a better time offroad (fuel injected vehicles can operate at steeper angles, since gravity doesn’t effect their fuel supply.
2 – Rust. You really don’t want to get a rusty Jeep, but that can sometimes be easier said than done. At a minimum, you should steer clear of any frame rust. Pay special attention to the rear sections of the frame, as well as the body mounts.
3 – Best bang for the buck. This part is a bet subjective, but if you are on a budget, you may want to look at an older model, like the YJ. Jeep YJs were made from 1987 – 1994 (although the fuel injected models were from 1991 – 1994). These are relatively cheap, and easily found. If square headlights aren’t your thing, then take a look at the Wrangler TJ (1995 – 2006). The Jeep TJ is a great choice if you don’t have the cash for a newer JK.
